For the fraction of the cost, individuals can make carpet stain-removal cleaning solutions from common household supplies that are just as effective as almost all of the carpet cleaning products on the market.

All you really need is white vinegar, common baking soda and hot water and the results will be just as good as the most expensive carpet cleaners at retail. Indeed, professional carpet cleaners - who know all of the secrets - say if your carpet cleaning problem cannot be handled with baking soda, water and vinegar, then professional help will be necessary.

Homemade carpet stain and spot remover

Most carpet stains and spots can be easily removed with a combination of the following mixture and a little elbow grease. (As with all fabric stains, getting to them quickly is always better than waiting). Mix white vinegar with baking soda, making it into a paste. Using a toothbrush, work the paste into the stain or spot, cleaning as deeply as the bristles allow, and give it a good scrub. In most all cases, the stain will be invisible after you allow the paste to dry and then vacuum thoroughly. More than one treatment may be required for the peskier stains.

Many people rent those steam cleaners at the supermarket, and they do a great job cleaning carpet, but skip the expense of the brand-name cleaning solution sold along with the machines and mix your own. Fill the cleaning solution reservoir with half warm water and half white vinegar and then follow the directions on the steam cleaner. White vinegar is a great general carpet cleaner in conjunction with steam, and will handle nearly all of your carpet cleaning chores. The added benefits of white vinegar are that it is among the best odor neutralizers anywhere and it dissolves stains as well as any other over-the-counter carpet cleaning solution because it contains acetic acid. The great thing about vinegar, baking soda and warm water is that they are very inexpensive, highly effective with no harsh chemicals, they sanitize and deodorize, and offer very little hazard to children and pets. Rinse thoroughly and as quickly as possible, should this occur.
